Biological Rythms Flashcards
(6 cards)
1
Q
What are biological rhythms?
A
Changes in body processes and behaviour in response to cyclical changes.
2
Q
What is an example of the carcadian rhythm?
A
Sleep/wake cycle.
3
Q
Why are biological rhythms needed?
A
In order to balance and optimise behaviour.
4
Q
What regulates biological rhythms?
A
- endogenous peacemakers (eg internal like SCN)
- exogenous zeitgebergs (external factors)
5
Q
Explain the circadian rhythm?
A
Receptors pass light info (exogenous zeitbergs) through optic nerve to SCN (picks up cues) which talks to pineal gland who produces melatonin.
6
Q
Studies that support the free-running idea? (Endogenous peacemakers can act alone)
A
- cave studies (folkhard and michel siffre).
- hamster study (destroyed scn)
