The Division Of The Nervous System: cental, Peripheral (Somatic And Automatic). ✅ Flashcards
(13 cards)
What are the two main nervous systems?
Central nervous system and peripheral nervous system.
What is the brain?
Centre of awareness, cortex is more developed in humans.
What is the role of the brain?
Receive info from sensory receptors and send messages to muscles and glands.
What is the spinal? What is its role?
It is an extension of the brain. It transports info to and from the brain and responsible for reflexes.
What is the role of the Central nervous system?
Process information and make decisions (not always aware of).
Why are we not always aware of these decisions being made?
Because this means the reactions would be slow and robotic.
What does the peripheral nervous system consist of? And what does it do?
The somatic and automatic nervous system. All nerves not apart of the CNS. It relays info (electrical signals) from CNS to body and vice versa.
Explain the somatic nervous system?
Has sensory receptors and motor paths. It is voluntary. Carries sensory info to the brain and info from motor cortex (controls skeletal).
Explain the autonomic nervous system?
- not under conscious control.
- control of interval vital organs, smooth muscles and glands.
- creates homeostasis.
What are the differences of Somatic and automatic nervous systems?
- one controls skeletal movement (S) other talks to organs (A).
- one has subdivides(A).
- one involves conscious control (S).
- one uses sensory receptors and motor pathways (S) the other just motor pathways(A).
Name the two subdivides from the autonomic nervous system?
Sympathetic NS and the Parasympathetic NS.
Explain the sympathetic NS? Give examples of what it does to our bodies?
This gets us ready for an emergency by triggering adrenaline which leads to fight or flight.
Eg, increases heart rate blood pressure, rapid breathing, pupils expand, salivation and digestion is paused so mouth becomes dry.
What is linked to “rest and digest”? Why?
Parasympathetic nervous system. As it is when out body recovers from sympathetic actions (paused digestion) so now digestion can continue.
