Biology and microscopy Flashcards
(16 cards)
What is the life process?
Molecular > Cell > Tissue > Organ > Organ system > Organism > Population > Community > Ecosystem > Biosphere
What is Abiogenesis
Life from not life
What is Biogenesis
Spontaneous generation
What are the 4 parts of cell theory
All organisms are made of cells, all plants and animals come from cells, cell is the basic unit of life, new cells come from pre-existing cells
What do microscopes must do?
Produce a magnified image of the specimen, separate the details in the image, and render the details visible to the human eye or camera
Simple microscope
Light passes through only 1 lens
Compound microscope
Light passes through an object and then through two or more lenses
Stereoscopic microscope
Gives a 3D view of an object, used for dissections
What is contrast
When light passes through cells, appears colourless. Staining the cell fixes this but it kills the cells as well.
What is resolution
Resolving power, the ability to distinguish between two structures that are very close together, there is a limit.
Electron microscope
Uses a beam of electrons to magnify the image which achieves 3D images using electrons
Scanning electron microcope
Produces a 3D image of a specimen’s surface features, surface is covered with electron dense material then electrons are bounced off it onto a sensor
Types of specimen
Whole organisms, natural tissue surfaces, exposed tissue surface
Transmission electron microscopy
Allows the observation of molecules within cells, very detailed, magnification of objects in the order of 100,000s
Confocal lasar scanning microscope
Laser beam is used to illuminate spots on specimen, computer compiles images created from each point to generate a 3D image, used on thick specimen
Microscope magnification : Field of view
Area that can be seen through the microscope given objective lens, as magnification increases, field of view decreases
