Cell structure Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is the difference between a prokaryote and an eukaryote?
Prokaryote has no nucleus, these are mostly bacteria. An eukaryote has an enclosed nucleus, these are plant and animals.
Cytoplasm
A jelly-like substance that supports the organelles inside
Cell membrane
Encloses the cell contents, semi-permeable membrane
Nucleus
Contains DNA, direct activities of the cell
Chromosomes
46 in every cell, chromosomes are for eukaryote cells
Endoplasmic reticulum
A system of channels from the nucleus, ribosomes cause er to be rough. A smooth er would be lacking ribosomes.
Golgi apparatus
Collect, package, and distribute molecules synthesized at one location in the cell and utilized at another location.
Lysosomes
Membrane-bound vesicles containing digestive enzymes, these enzymes break down food particles and destroys old cell parts
Ribosomes
Site of protein synthesis, assembled in nucleolus
Mitochondria
Converts glucose to usable energy for the cell (ATP), powerhouse.
Chloroplast
Only in plants cells, have special pigment molecules called chlorophyll that absorb sunlight and convert it into glucose.
What do only plant cells have?
Chloroplasts, central vacuole, and cell wall
What do only animal cells have?
The centriole, which plays a role in cell division.
