Plant transport Flashcards
(16 cards)
What is the Plant vascular system
Interconnected tubes extend throughout the plant, made of xylem and phloem
What is xylem
Transports water and minerals from soil to leaves, non living
What is root pressure
Soil outside the root is hypotonic to root cell so water enters the cell by osmosis
What is cytoplasmic streaming
Movement of chloroplasts that act like a fluid.
What is transpiration
The process of water vapour leaving the leaf through stomata
What are lentils
Lens shaped openings in the set and roots of plants which allow gas flow
What is cohesion
The attraction of water molecules to other water molecules
What is adhesion
The attraction of water molecules to molecules of other substances
How is water and minerals transported throughout a plant?
Using xylem vessels where water is created from transpiration. Cohesion and adhesion aid the water molecules to travel up throughout the plant.
What do root hairs do
Increase surface area for osmosis
What is active transport
Moving from a high concentration to low concentration with requires ATP (energy)
What is phloem
The vessel that transports sugar (sap) from leaves to rest of the plant, live cells, end to end in long connecting tubes
Plant transport
When glucose is produced in leaves (palisade cells and spongy mesophyll cells)
What is source
Where the products of photosynthesis (sugar, C6H12O6) are manufactured.
What is sink
Where the products of photosynthesis (sugar, C6H12O6) will be used or stored.
What are the two types of cells in the phloem tissue
Sieve tube elements (or sieve tube members) and companion cells.
