biopsychology Flashcards
(12 cards)
what are the divisions of the nervous system?
the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system
what are the divisions of the peripheral nervous system?
somatic and autonomic
what are the branches of the autonomic nervous system?
sympathetic and parasympathetic
what does the CNS consist of?
spinal cord and the brain
What is the function of the CNS?
receives information from the senses and controls the body’s response, regulates body’s physiological processes and controls behaviors
what is the spinal cord and what is its function?
a thin structure running from the base of the brain to the coccyx that consists of 31 pairs of spinal nerves. it’s function is to relay information between the brain and the rest of the body
what are the four main areas of the brain?
the cerebrum, cerebellum, diencephalon and the brain stem
what is the function of the peripheral nervous system?
carries sensory information from the body to the CNS
what is the function of the somatic nervous system?
part of the peripheral nervous system that controls the voluntary movement of skeletal muscles, carries sensory information to and from the CNS
what does the autonomic nervous system do?
governs involuntary activities of non-skeletal muscles and internal body systems, self-regualting
what does the sympathetic nervous system do?
prepares the body for rapid action, produces arousal and energy. e.g. increases heart rate, inhibits saliva production, decreases stomach activity
what does the parasympathetic nervous system do?
involved in reducing arousal and conserving energy once threat has passed e.g. reduces heart rate, increases saliva production
