ABRASION
Skin scraped off
Bleeding usually limited
INCISION
Cut caused by sharp object like knife,
scissors, razors.
Edges of wound are smooth and
regular
Deep cut can have heavy bleeding,
damage to muscles or nerves
LACERATION
Excessive force causing tearing
Wound has jagged, irregular edges
PUNCTURE
Cause by sharp object like a pin, nail or pointed
instrument
External bleeding usually minimal but internal
bleeding can occur
Different types of bleeding
ARTERIAL blood spurts, is bright red and results in
heavy blood loss
VENOUS blood is slower, steadier, and dark red
CAPILLARY blood oozes
Steps to heavy bleeding
Gloves
Use hand over thick gauze to apply pressure for 5-10
minutes
Elevate the injured part above the level of the heart
unless a fracture is suspected
Apply a pressure bandage
First Aid for Minor Wounds
Wash hands and put on gloves
Rinse wound under slow running water
Use antiseptic alcohol wipe to disinfect wound
Start at the center and wash in an outward direction
Discard the wipe after each pass
Use sterile gauze to dry the wound by blotting
gently
Apply appropriate size sterile dressing
