Blood Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is blood and what 4 components
Specialised body fluid containing plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets
What does blood plasma transport (3)
- Soluble digestion products - (glucose from small intestine)
- Carbon dioxide - (produced by aerobic respiration) from organs to lungs to be breathed out
- Waste product - (urea from liver to kidneys to be excreted out in urine)
What do red blood cells transport
Oxygen from lungs to body cells
What do Red blood cells contain
Haemoglobin - oxygen carrying molecule
How and where do you produce oxyhaemoglobin
Oxygen + haemoglobin -> oxyhaemoglobin
Lungs
How are red blood cells specialised and why
No nucleus= more room for haemoglobin
Biconcave shape = greater surface area so oxygen can diffuse in and out rapidly
What is the purpose of white blood cells
To form part of the immune system by making antibodies
Why do white blood cells contain a nucleus
Because nucleus contains DNA which encodes the instructions white blood cells need
What are platelets and what’s there purpose
Tiny fragments of cells and their job is to help the blood clot
3 uses of donated blood
- Replace blood lost during an injury
- Some people are given platelets extracted from blood to help in clotting
- Proteins extracted from blood can also be useful e.g. antibodies
What things do you need to be careful about in blood transfusion
Make sure that the donated blood is the same blood type as the patients. Otherwise the body’s immune system will reject the blood- patient may die
