Exercise Flashcards
(8 cards)
During exercise what happens to the body
The body needs a great deal of energy for muscle contraction, aerobic respiration increases
How do you provide extra oxygen 3 (during exercise)
Breathing rate and breathing volume increases to get more oxygen into the bloodstream
(Breathing more frequently, more deep)
Heart rate increases to pump oxygenated blood around the body
What happens when there is an insufficient amount of oxygen
Anaerobic respiration takes place in the muscles
What is anaerobic respiration in the muscle
The oxidation of glucose is incomplete leading to glucose being converted into the chemical lactic acid.
What’s the side effect of a build of lactic acid
During long periods of vigorous exercise, lactic acid causes the muscles to become fatigued. This causes the muscles to stop contracting efficiently
What does the body do when there is a build up of lactic acid
Body has to remove the lactic acid from muscles through oxygen debt
What is oxygen debt
Oxygen debt is the amount of extra oxygen the body needs after exercise to remove the lactic acid built up during anaerobic respiration. Why people continue breathing rapidly after finishing exercise.
How is lactic acid removed from the muscles after anaerobic respiration
The lactic acid is transported out of the muscles by the blood, where it is then taken to the liver to be converted back to glucose through chemical reactions.
