  1. What is the first action step required when a rxn to bld transfused is identified?

A
  1. Stop the transfustion.
  2. Fever/hives
  3. Normal Saline
  4. Because adverse reactions can happen at anytime and even a while after the transfusion takes place.

Steps from the cooler to
signing with witness..

A

*HH and gloves
1. Right blood in the cooler is there with the paper showing the time out of the fridge (30min from out to start) and temp is right (between 1 and 6 C)
2. Check how the blood looks
3. Right blood? Is it O neg/pts type that was wanted?
4. Pt. details on both labels including cross matching. Expiration date.
Doff and HH
5. I will ask my witness to check the bag and then we’ll both sign.

What equipment is needed?

A
  • If the bag has already been spiked and clamped, pretend it hasn’t.
    1. The red infusion line with a filter
    2. The blood and a clamp
    3. The pump

How do you set the pump?

A

*200ml/hour
Volume (300ml or so, check)
1. Push open door, push yes
2. After it’s primed and connected, load it in the direction of travel
3. Put the 2 bits in their spot and the little hook in its spot, close the door
4. space line, unclamp
5. Drug library? no
6. do the rate and volume, leave the time alone
7. Verbalise that you will first do a set of obs; HR, temp, BP
8. ‘Happy to begin transfusing?’ Press start/stop
9. Verbalise that after the transfusion is finished you will flush the line with saline, 50ml/hour
