What is the functions of whole blood (LO)

Transport (water, solutes and formed elements) 

Temperature Regulation 

Water Balance  (blood volume)

What is whole blood comprised of (LO)

60% plasma (water, solutes)

40% formed elements (RBCs, WBCs, and PLTs)

Compare serum and plasma (LO)

Plasma- Found in vasculature- Anticoagulant blood tubes- blood does not clot- purple top (EDTA), green top (Heparin), blue top (Citrate) 

 

Serum- lacks coagulation proteins (fibrinogen) Blood clot is allowed- red top (no additive), marble top (gel separator)
