Blood/ blood cells Flashcards
Memorise what blood does, what blood is and it's formation (15 cards)
1
Q
Which germ layer is blood from?
A
A third, middle layer of cells called the mesoderm.
2
Q
Which system is blood part of?
A
Circulatory or cardiovascular system.
3
Q
What does blood do?
A
- Carries water, oxygen and nutrients obtained from digestion to the cells around the body;
- Removes waste material and carbon dioxide from cells; and
- Maintains body temperature by delivering heat from the liver
4
Q
What is blood a mixture of?
A
- red blood cells
- white blood cells
- platelets
- suspended in a liquid matrix called plasma
5
Q
What are erythrocytes?
A
Red blood cells
6
Q
What are leukocytes?
A
White blood cells
7
Q
What are thrombocytes?
A
Platelets
8
Q
What is blood’s formation?
A
- in the bone marrow (soft, fatty tissue inside bone cavities)
- differentiation process called haemopoiesis
- all types of blood cells derived from stell cells,
9
Q
What is the lifetime of blood cells?
A
White blood cells- a few hours to a few days
Platelets- about 10 days
Red blood cells- 100 to 120 days
10
Q
What do erythrocytes do?
A
- have no nucleus
- contain haemoglobin (iron-containing compound that carries oxygen around the body)
- a small amount of carbon dioxide is also transported
11
Q
What are haemoglobins?
A
- large protein molecule
- four protein chains form the ring
- each chain of the ring contains an iron ion
- oxygen binds to the iron and is transported around the circulatory system
12
Q
What do leukocytes do?
A
- contain a nucleus
- bigger than red blood cells
- many types
- help rid the body of bacteria and viruses by surrounding and destroying them or producing chemicals that kill them
13
Q
What do thrombocytes do?
A
- have no nucleus
- fragments of large cells located in red bone marrow
- trigger formation of fibrin strands to form a clot that stops bleeding when an injury occurs
14
Q
What does plasma do?
A
- clear yellow liquid in which blood cells are suspended
- 90% of plasma is water
- the rest being dissolved food, waste products and hormones
- regulates body temprature by transferring heat around the body
15
Q
What are proteins in the blood?
A
- most abundant compounds in the blood
- built from amino acids,
- acts as transport substances for hormones, vitamins, minerals, lipids and other materials,
- help balance the pH levels
- act as an energy reserve for tissues and muscle
