Body fluid Flashcards
(9 cards)
Percentage of fluid and solid within the body based on gender.
Female - 55% fluid, 45% solid
Male - 40% fluid, 60% solid
What is the name of the fluid surrounding the cell?
Interstitial fluid.
Measurement of the ICF and ECF.
Intracellular fluid - 2/3 of the total body fluid
Extracellular fluid - 1/3 of the total body fluid (interstitial fluid - 80%, plasma - 20%)
What is the difference between the passive and active process?
Passive process - transport process without energy, along the concentration gradient
Active process - transport process requires energy, against the concentration gradient
What are some types of passive processes?
Diffusion - net movement of molecules from an area of high concentration to area of low concentration
Osmosis - diffusion of water
What factor affect diffusion?
Difference in gradient, surface area, thickness of membrane, mass of particles, and temperature
What is the difference between simple and facilitated diffusion?
Simple diffusion does not need anything to cross whilst facilitated diffusion need help (either channel or carrier mediated).
Simple diffusion:
- hydrophobic
- uncharged
- non-polar
What is secretion?
Cell trying to release certain substance or packet from plasma membrane to exterior.
Exocytosis - release of molecules
What is absorption?
Substance moves into the cell.
Endocytosis - entering of molecules
