Positions Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is the anatomical position?
Anatomical position is the reference position that being used to accurately describe the body part.
- Foots are lying flat on the ground with heels pointing forward
- Eyes and face directed front
- Body stood erect with the legs parallel to the body
- Arms are on the side of the body with the palms facing front
What anatomical planes are there?
- Sagittal plane
- Coronal plane
- Transverse plane
What is the sagittal plane? What are the associated axes?
Sagittal plane is the vertical plane that divides the body into right and left sections. Associated axis are sagittal axis and longitudinal axis.
What is the difference between midsagittal and parasagittal planes?
Midsagittal/medial planes are the sagittal plane that has equally divided right and left sections.
Parasagittal/paramedial planes are the sagittal plane that has right and left sections that are unequal in length.
Lists anatomical positions .
- Inferior - towards the soles of the feet
- Superior - towards the coronal of the head
- Posterior (dorsal) - towards the rear surface of the body
- Anterior (ventral) - towards the front surface of the body
- Superficial - towards the skin surface
- Deep - underneath the skin surface
- Prone - lying face down
- Supine - lying face up
- Medial - towards the midline
- Lateral - further from the midline
- Distal - further from the median plane
- Proximal - towards the median plane
- Contralateral - on the opposite sides
- Ispilateral - on the same side
Lists the anatomical movements.
- Abduction - moving further from the body
- Adduction - moving towards the body
- Flexion - bending of the muscle
- Extension - straightening of the muscle
- Elevation - movement towards superior position
- Depression - movement towards inferior position
- Protraction/protrude - shoulder movement towards anterior direction
- Retraction/retrude - shoulder movement towards posterior direction
- Lateral rotation - external rotation
- Medial rotation - internal rotation
- Supination - move towards supine position
- Pronation - move towards prone position
List the anatomical dental terms.
- Labial - front surface of the teeth (towards the lip)
- Buccal - front surface of the teeth (towards the cheek)
- Incisal - top of the incisors and canines
- Occlusal - top of the molar and premolars
- Palatal - back surface of the teeth on the maxillary arch
- Lingual - back surface of the teeth on the mandibular arch
- Maxillary - upper teeth
- Incisor - front teeth
- Canine - pointy teeth
- Premolar - back teeth
- Molar - most further back teeth
- Mesial - side of the teeth that towards midline
- Distal - side of the teeth that further from the midline
- Vestibular - front surface of the teeth
