Bone 3: developmental orthodontist disease Flashcards

1
Q

Common developmental orthodox abnormalities seen in equine

A
  1. osteochondrosis -
    a) osteochondritis dessicans
    b) sub chondral bone cyst
  2. physics = inflammation growth plate which leads to
    a) angular limb deformities
    b) flexural bone deformities where bone grows more rapidly than assoiated soft tissue)

Q

Common developmental orthodox abnormalities seen in canine

A

Osteochondrosis
 Ununited anconeal process?
 Fragmented medial coronoid process – elbow extremely important in smalls, less so farm and equine

b) hypertrophic osteodystrophy
c) leg calve perthes
d) hip dysplasia

Q

Common developmental orthodox abnormalities seen in porcine

A

Osteochondrosis (OCD – voer production, grow too fast)
Pigs – bad welfare, growth, intensive, not appropriate exercise
Lame young pigs – gees, diet, hormones, etc = OCD

Q

Causes of subchondral cyst

appearance on radiograph

A

2 causes

  1. abnormal endochondral ossification - retention cartilage, collapse
  2. trauma - articular cartilagee and SC bone, pressure from synovial fluid

area of radiolucency within bone as fluid filled

Q

What is physitis?

A

enlargement of physics (growth plate)
typically in young animals due to:
- inflammation
- disruption of endrochondral ossification at physis

Q

Pathogenesis of hypertrophic osteodystrophy

A

Idiopathic aetiology, assume infection (bac or viral), over supplemnetation or vascular abnormalities

pathogenesis = necrosis of capillary loops of cartilage of metaphyseal physis growth plate long bone.
Lame and sore due to inflammation

get an abnormal cuff of metaplastic cartilage and bone

Q

Clinical signs dog with hypertrophic osteodystrophy

A

lame, fever, lethargic, painful

primarily long bones distal aspect as pathogenesis is necrosis of cartilage in metaphyseal physis
