Location Defintion
Where a place is on a map, its latitude and longitude coordinates
Locale
Settings where everyday activities take place, e.g. an office, park or home. These settings affect social interactions and help to forge values, attitudes and behaviours
Sense of Place
The subjective and emotional attachment people have to a place. People develop a “sense of place” through experience and knowledge of a particular area
Insider Perspective of Place:
The perspective of someone who knows a place well and is familiar with the place. They feel welcome in the place.
Outsider perspective of place:
The perspective of someone who does not feel welcome in a place/ feels excluded.
Near places:
Geographically close places to where a person lives
Far places:
Geographically distant from where a person lives
Experienced places:
Places that a person has spent time in
Media places:
Places an individual hasn’t visited but has a reputation based from media representation.
What is an Endogenous factor?
Internal factors that shape a place’s character
What is an Exogenous factor?
External factors that shape a places character
Examples of Endogenous Factors

- Land use
- Built environment and Infrastructure
- Demographic and Economic Characteristics
Examples of Exogenous Factors
Flows of people, resources, money and investment and ideas, relationships with other places
Descriptive Approach to Understanding Place
Places can be understood through specific human and physical characteristics
Social Constructionist Approach to Understanding Place
Place is a product of a particular set of social processes occurring at a particular time.
Phenomenological Approach to Understanding Place
Interested in how an individual experiences place.
Topophilia Definition
The affectionate bond between people and place.
What is a Palimpsest?
Something reused or altered but still bearing visible traces of its earlier form
What is Localism?
An affection for or emotional ownership of a particular place.
Often demonstrated with “NIMBYism’ (not in my backyard)
What is Regionalism?
Consciousness and loyalty to a distinct region with a population which has similarities
What is Nationalism?
Loyalty and devotion to a nation, which creates a sense of national consciousness
