Background of Conflict

- In the 1990s, The Soviet Union collapsed and Ukraine gained independence
- Ukraine remained heavily pro-Russia with close ties and lots of citizens from Russia
- In 2014, Ukraine aimed to create closer relations with the EU and move away from Russia. In response Russia annexed Crimea
- Armed conflict continued in Eastern Ukraine until February 24th 2022, when Putin launched a full invasion into Ukraine
