Bowlby's monotropic theory Flashcards
(5 cards)
RTS Bowlby’s monotropic theory comes from…
Lorenz
What did Lorenz find that supports Bowlby’s monotropic theory?
He found a critical period of 12-17 hours in which imprinting had to take place or it would not later on
Why does Lorenz study support Bowlby’s monotropic theory?
It supports Bowlby’s concept of a critical period, that infants must attach within the first 2.5 yrs of life otherwise it would be difficult to form attachments later
Who conducted research to contradict Bowlby’s monotropic theory?
Schaffer and Emerson who found evidence to support that children do form multiple attachments which may help children to develop socially, emotionally and cognitively
What is an alternative explanation of Bowlby’s monotropic theory of attachment?
Learning theory which proposes that we learn to attach to a feeder via stimulus, response and association, rather than attachment being inate as it gives us survival advantage
