Why does literacy effect boys education?
Sugarman found parents read more with girls, developing a reputation as a ‘feminine’ subject
Why does globalisation effect boys education?
- programmes such as GIST and WISE meant more women are taking traditionally male subjects and jobs
- there are more white collar jobs than blue collar, meaning there are more jobs for women, so men don’t work as hard/have ambitions
What is the evaluation point to globalisation (white collar blue collar)?
Blue collar jobs are manual anyway so therefore do not need any qualifications, so boys going for manual jobs wouldn’t be trying in school anyway, and boys going for white collar jobs wouldn’t have been effected
Why does feminisation of education effect boys education?
Schools are usually full of female teachers which meant they taught in ‘female ways’
What is the evaluation point of teachers being female?
so many initiatives are put into place to benefit and help boys, eg teacher training
Why does unrealistic attitudes/lower expectations effect boys education?
There is evidence that teachers have become more tolerant to boys missing deadlines and misbehaving, this means boys will be achieving lower grades
Why does boys being more descriptive effect boys grades?
Boys being more disruptive leads to them getting kicked out, which means they loose learning time, which results in lower grades
Why does Masculinity and the anti school subculture effect boys education?
- Boys were put into higher sets however messed around, which lead to being moved down, resulting in lower self esteem
- Boys form a subculture, if one ‘leading boy’ messes around the others in the group will as well (Willis 1977)
What are the disadvantages to Willis’ study of subcultures?
it was conducted in 1977 meaning it was out of date
Why does felling and behaving differently effect boys education?
- girls underestimate their ability whereas boys over estimate
- girls try harder in lessons and with their presentation, whereas boys do the bare minimum
Why does leisure activities effect boys education?
- boys tend to do more sports whereas girls socialise and read more
- most school subjects demand good comprehension skills which girls posses as because they read as a leisure activity whereas boys do sport
Why does boys not reading effect their education?
- there are fewer books appealing to girls than boys
- boys see reading as feminine
Does class and ethnicity effect boys education?
- there are boys from the working class underachieving, not middle class, therefor not all boys underachieve
- boys still end up with the better degrees
What policies were put in place to raise boys achievement?
- Teacher training to help teachers ‘understand’ boys, they include competition in learning etc
- corsework was removed, as it helped girls
Why has moral panic effected boys grades?
- Women are taking over male jobs because men are supposedly dominant gender, so boys feel demoralised
- in 1988 girls were able to do ‘boys’ subjects meaning they were never actually underachieving, there was no way of comparing
What two things do Epstein et al believe schools need to do?
1) masculinise the education system
2) literature has to be bought for boys
What two things do Francis and Skeleton believe need to happen?
1) Government need to introduce more boy friendly subjects
2) Recruit more male teachers
