What are the three sub-heading factors that influence education?

Why do middle-class teachers wrongly judge working-class as potentially troublesome? (2)
1) they may not conform to uniform rules
2) negative experiences with older siblings

What does Becker (1971) argue?
Teachers operate in the classroom with an ‘ideal’ student stereotype in their head in which they judge students either positively or negatively

What does labelling mean?
To attach a meaning or definition to them

What do studies show about teachers and labelling?
- Teachers often attach such labels regardless of a pupils ability
- they label pupils based on stereotyped assumptions about class (eg w/c is negative m/c positive)

What did Ray Rist (1970) say?
- used US primary school students
- found that teacher used information from children’s homes used to put them on particular tables
- eg Tiger Table (neat and tidy, m/c, seated close to teachers) Clown Table (troublesome, w/c, would not and could not learn)
Who found schools ‘triage’ students into three streams?
Gillborn and Youdell
What are the three parts to streaming?
1) students who will do well
2) students that need help to get into the A-C band
3) those deemed helpless
