What is primary data?
Information collected by sociologists themselves for their own purposes
What are the advantages and disadvantages to primary data?
+ more reliable
+ collect exactly the right information
- biased
- time consuming which means it’s more expensive
What is secondary data?
Information that’s been collected by somebody else but can be used by a sociologist for their own purposes
What are the advantages and disadvantages of secondary data?
+ not as time consuming and expensive
+ quick&easy
- who collected the data may not have the same motives
- not as reliable
What pieces of information do the government collect data on?
- taxes
- deaths
- marriage
- addresses
- immigration/emmegration
what other organisations might collect ‘official statistics’?
- charities
- churches
- banks
