Brain Flashcards
name the lobes of the brain and their function
frontal - cognitive and control of voluntary movement/activity
temporal - processes memories integrating them with taste, sound and sight
parietal - processes info about temperature, touch and movement
occipital - vision
what separates the cerebral hemisphere and what is underneath this
the inter-hemispheric deep longitudinal fissure and when pulled apart you find the corpus callosum, nerve fibres that connect the left and right side of brain for communication
what makes up the brain stem
midbrain , pons and medulla
what divides the frontal and parietal lobe
central sulcus
what is the precentral gyrus and post central gyrus
voluntary movement
somatosensory cortex
what is the limbic system
involved in motivation, emotion, learning and memory
a structure involved in this system is the cingulate gyrus found on top of corpus calossum
what is the function of the thalmus
relay motor and sensory signals to the cerebral cortex
what is the hypothalmus
responsible for homeostasis of body, directs hormone release from pituitary gland
what is the pituitary gland
part of endocrine system, housed in the sella tucica which is made by the sphenoid bone
what is the pineal gland
manufactures melatonin hormone
what are the three types of fibres in the brain and what do they do
porjection fibres pass from the cerebral cortex and couple the brain with the spinal cord
commissural fibres connect the two hemispheres of the brain
association fibres connect areas within the same cerebral hemisphere
what are the three meningeal layers in the brain
pia mater
arachnoid space
dura mater
where can the CSF be found
subarachnoid space
