Brain & CN Development Flashcards
(35 cards)
In the 5th week of development, 3 swellings called ________ __________ appear at the cranial end of the neural tube
primitive vesicles
The three primitive vesicles give rise to all structures of
brain, cerebellum, and ventricular system
Prosencephalon secondary vesicle(s)
telencephalon and diencephalon
Mesencephalon secondary vesicle(s)
mesencephalon
Rhombencephalon secondary vesicle(s)
metencephalon and myelencephalon
Telencephalon neural derivatives
cerebral hemispheres and globus pallidus (cerebrum)
Telencephalon cavity derivatives
lateral ventricle
Diencephalon neural derivatives
Thalamus, hypothalamus, and epithalamus
Diencephalon cavity derivatives
third ventricle (eye cup)
Mesencephalon neural derivatives
midbrain
Mesencephalon cavity derivatives
cerebral aqueduct
Metencephalon neural derivatives
pons & cerebellum
Metencephalon cavity derivatives
Upper part of 4th ventricle
Myelencephalon neural derivatives
medulla
Myelencephalon cavity derivatives
lower part of 4th ventricle/central canal
Formation of brain flexures occurs during the 4th week due to
rapid growth & head folding
Midbrain flexure (primary) occurs
early in the area of the mesencephalon
Cervical flexure (primary) occurs
where the hindbrain meets the spinal cord
Pontine flexure (secondary) occurs
posterior to the pons and medulla as the roof thins out & the 4th ventricle opens
Choroid plexus
produces CSF
How is the choroid plexus formed?
It comes from vascular pia mater
Sensory is
dorsal & lateral
Motor is
ventral & medial
The alar plate and basal plate is separated by
sulcus limitans
