Breast Cancer Flashcards
(11 cards)
1
Q
Describe Oncogenes
A
- mutated form of normal genes, involved in promoting cell proliferation
- mutation result in dominant gain of function
2
Q
Describe Tumour Suppressor genes
A
- genes whose normal function
in regulating proliferation is slow down or stop. - Mutation results in recessive loss of function
3
Q
Describe DNA repair genes
A
-detect irregularity in the DNA structure, remove the abnormal DNA and synthesize new normal
sequence DNA
4
Q
What are the 3 breast cancer molecular classifications?
A
- Her2
- Triple negative
- Luminal
5
Q
What are the 2 categories of DNA Repair ?
A
- Direct Damage Reversal
- Excision of DNA damage
6
Q
What are some forms DNA damafe excision ?
A
- base excision repair
- mismatch repair
- strand break repair
7
Q
Describe the basic process of DNA Damage excision
A
- nucleotide segment containing base damage
- double-helix distortion/ mis-repaired bases are replaced by normal nucleotide via DNA polymerase synthesis process
7
Q
Describe Base Excision Repair
A
- involves DNA-N-glycosylases
- these can recognise a single damaged base & cleave the bond between it & sugar in the DNA
8
Q
Decribe Nucleotide Excision Repair (NER)
A
- Nicks DNA around damaged base & removes region
- fills with Pol on 3’ ends & attaches 5’ end with ligase
9
Q
What are some specific types of damage that NER can repair ?
A
- thymine dimers
- chemically modified bases
10
Q
Describe Mismatch Repair System
A
- proofreading fails = methyl-directed mismatch repair system activated
- found in all specie
- recognises mismatched base pairs, excises incorrect & carries out repair synthesis
