only 5% could vote, 2/3 of elections were uncontested and corruption was common

BPUs first demonstration
1831- raised 15k crowd that had combination of middle and working class pressure

1832- reform groups planned to simultaneously withdraw money and stop paying taxes, scared the lords enough to push the law through

1842- 3.3 million
1848- 5.7 million but only 2 million were real

what happened with the national charter association
formed in 1840, gained 70k members in 2 years but failed soon after from lack of funds since people couldn’t afford the membership
the hyde park riots
the reform league held a meeting and 200k flooded the park, it ended peacefully and gained them support
1867 reform act
all male householders in boroughs could vote, added 1 mill new voters, now a working class majority in towns
successes and failures of 1867 reform act
politicians realised the need for campaigning and actually appealing to the people but plural voting still existed- if someone had land in different boroughs and counties they get more votes
