Anatta, non-existence of the self, asserts that one’s illusive consciousness is reborn, rather than a soul. The cycle of death and rebirth epitomises life’s impermanence, ie. Annica.
Key Beliefs: Karma
Karma is the law of behavioural cause and effect which dictates one’s next form of life. It is dependent on skillful vs unskillful actions.
Key Beliefs: Dharma
Dharma is the truth of existence, encapsulated in Buddha’s teachings. This includes the 4 Noble Truths and the Noble 8-fold path.
Key Beliefs: Samsara
When desire is fully extinguished by following the Middle way. An adherent will be unbound from the mortal world, ie, the illusion of existence
Key Beliefs: Nirvana
Nirvana, or non-existence, is the release from desire and suffering, ie. dukkha, via enlightenment. Nirvana can be reached by anyone.
Linear or Cyclical?
The Buddhist worldview is Cyclical and is characterised by the belief that one can escape suffering in nirvana once the truth that desire is what perpetuates the illusion of existence is realised.
