C&D - Realist theories of C&D Flashcards
(2 cards)
1
Q
What are realist theories?
A
Theories that suggest crime is a real problem, not a social construction. Crime requires solutions, and sociology should inform social policy to tackle crime
2
Q
Why do realist criminologists criticise traditional sociological perspectives? Provide examples within theories
A
They fail to identify crime as a problem and provide solutions to crime.
Functionalists - crime is useful for boundary maintenance and social change, not functional for victims
Marxism - Fails to provide realistic solutions. “End capitalism” is idealistic
