Carboxylic Acids Flashcards
(4 cards)
What is the functional group in carboxylic acids?
The carboxyl group -COOH
C-double bond-O OH
What bases do carboxylic acids react with?
What do these reactions form?
Metal oxide+carboxylic acid->salt+water
Metal hydroxide+carboxylic acid->salt +water
Metal carbonate+carboxylic acid->salt+water+carbon dioxide
Is the carboxyl group polar or non-polar? What types of bonds can be formed?
The carboxyl group is polar, allowing the carboxylic acids to form hydrogen bonds(hydrogen bonding)
What types of melting and boiling points do carboxylic acids have?
How soluble are they in water?
Are short chain or long chain carboxylic acids more soluble?
-High melting and boiling points
-They’re polar because of the hydrogen bonding so can dissolve in water and other polar solvents
-short chain are much more soluble
