carbs Flashcards
(11 cards)
Carbohydrates (function, 1, comparrsion betweeen herbis and carnis )
- energy source for daily activities and metabolic functions
- herbivores rely heavily on them for energy, carnivores less so
what are the signs of a carbohydrate deficiency
lethargy, poor growth, weight loss
what are carbohydrates used for
provide energy
support digestion
involved in cell signalling
what are the 3 types of carbohydrates
monosaccharides
disaccharides
polysaccharides
what is the carb intake of omnivores
eat both simple and complex carbs throgh the mixed diet of plant and animal sources
what is the carb intake of carnivores
limited carb digestion, diet focuses more on protein and fats
what is the carb intake of herbivores
they are specialised for cellulose digestion, this results in having a high fibre diet
where are carbs absorbed
mostly in the small intestine, glucose transporters also facilitate glucose entry into cells. excess glucose is then converted to glycogen or fat
where and how are carbs digested in ruminants
cellulose are fermented in the rumen. microbes will break it down into simple sugars - an energy rich compound
give effects of carb deficiency
low energy
impared growth
poor digestive health
weight loss
what are the 2 types of carbohydrates
simple - quick energy source
complex - provide sustained energy
