Cardiovascular System Flashcards
(17 cards)
size of heart
size of a fist
how many chambers does the heart have?
4
location of heart
mediastinum in the center of the chest cavity but more on the left side of chest
endocardium
inner layer of heart that is smooth and thin which reduces friction as blood passes through
myocardium
thick, muscular middle layer of heart. contraction of the layer develops the pressure required to pump blood through blood vessels
pericardium
double-layered pleural sac
Atria
receiving chambers- blood returns to the heart via veins first collects in the atria
ventricles
pumping chambers-much thicker myocardium and their contraction ejects blood out of the heart and into great arteries
(AV) tricuspid valve
controls opening between the right atrium and right ventricle
apex
tip of edge at lower edge
pulmonary valve
half moon- prevents blood that has been ejected into the pulmonary artery from returning to the right ventricle as it relaxes
mitral valve
2 cusps- blood flows through this atrioventricular valve to the left ventricle and can’t go back up the left atrium
aortic valve
blood leaves the left ventricle through this valve and cannot return to the left ventricle
arteries
vessels that carry blood away from the heart
blood vessels
smooth,as blood flows through them, it experiences some friction and resistance
pulmonary circulation
between the heart and lungs, transport deoxygenated blood to the lungs to get oxygen, and then back to the heart
veins
vessels that bring blood back to the heart
