Nervous system Flashcards
(27 cards)
CSF
cerebrospinal fluid protects the brain by preventing the it from contacting the skull
Cerebrum
divided into 2 hemispheres and largest part of the brain
(4) Lobes of cerebrum
frontal, parietal,temporal, occipital
thalamus
2 bulb-shaped halves in the center of the brain relays sensory impulses to the cerebral cortex for processing and sorting
hypothalamus
controls hormones released by the pituitary gland, responsible for autonomic processes( body temp, hunger, sleep, thirst, blood, and volume)
brainstem
located between the cerebrum and spinal cord
(3) regions of brainstem
midbrain, pons, medulla oblongata
cerebellum
coordinating movements directed by the cerebrum so they’re graceful and efficient, all involuntary movements
spinal cord
31 pairs of spinal nerves branch out from the spinal cord, connecting to all parts of the body, relays impulses from the PNS to the brain
function of the nervous system
detect impulses from the senses: control center of the body
major organs of the nervous system
brain, spinal cord, senses, nerves
difference between neurons and neuroglia
neurons are made up of 10% of the system and neuroglia ( “nerve-glue”) makes up 90% of the nervous system
dendrite
receive the nerve impulses from the senses or another neuron
soma
body of the neuron that holds nucleus
node of ranvier
impulses jump from node to node, which increase speed to impulse
myelin
insulates the axon produced by the schwann cells
axon
passage way for nerve impulses after cell body: end of axon terminal
axon terminal
button like endings of axon through which axons make contact with other nerve cells
5 different types of sensory receptors
hair follicle receptor, ruffini’s corpuscle, pacinian corpuscle, merkel’s disk, free nerve ending
papillae
bumps on your tongue (taste buds)
3 tiny bones and nickname
malleus (hammer), incus (anvil), stapes(stirrup)
cochlea
bony snail-shaped structure containing membranes filled with fluid
cornea
made of thick, transparent tissue
pupil
opening in the center of Iris
