Cardiovascular System Lesson 6 Flashcards
(10 cards)
What happens to are heart when we get fitter ?
Cardiac hypertrophy / are heart gets bigger.
3 points to describe what cardiac hypertrophy is
Our heart gets bigger
Our heart can hold more blood
Our heart can pump out more blood
Cardiac hypertrophy produces 3 changes
Increase in stroke volume
Bardycardia ( decrease resting heart rate)
Increase in exercising cardiac output
Increase stroke volume
Heart is bigger and stronger
Bigger heart can hold more blood
A stronger heart can pump more blood out with each beat and so stroke volume increases
Bradycardia
Stole volume increases meaning the heart is pumping out more blood with each beat
More blood each beat means it can beat less often
This means heart rate is reduced to less than 60bpm
Increase in cardiac output
Sv has increased / resting heart rate has decreased.
At rest cardiac output remains the same.
During exercise sv increases and heart rate needs to increase.
Capillarisation of muscles and alveoli
Increase number of capillaries around the muscles and alveoli.
This means the extra blood during the exercise can travel to the muscles.
Increase in blood volume
This means we produce more red blood cells and hemoglobin
Decrease in recovery time
Heart rate recovery time decreases because of increase in stoke volume caopilarisation and blood volume.
After training we can recover much faster than an untrained person
Decrease in resting blood pressure
Blood pressure : decrease pressure of blood on arteries walls.
Training means we have a lower resting blood pressure. Reduces pressure the blood applies in the walls of the arteries.
