Cardiovascular Systems 2 Flashcards
(16 cards)
Definition of Lungs:
The lungs are the organs in the body responsible for both ventilation and respiration.
Respiration:
The process in the lungs that gets oxygen into the blood and carbon dioxide out of the blood.
Definition of Ventilation:
This gets air into the lungs. It just means breathing.
Definition of Anatomy:
The study of the body’s parts and how they are put together.
Definition of Evolution:
The belief that everything in the universe arose as the result of random chemical reactions.
Definition of Chemoreceptor
Special cells sensitive to changes in the levels of certain chemicals or substances in the body.
Definition of Carbon Monoxide:
A colorless, odorless gas that consists of one carbon atom and one oxygen atom.
Definition of Pleurisy:
When the pleural membranes become inflamed.
Definition of Eustachian Tubes:
These small tubes drain any excess mucus or other fluid that might collect in the middle ear.
Definition of Upper Respiratory System:
The URS is located above the chest. This consists of the nose, nasal cavity, the sinuses, the pharynx, and the larynx.
Mucous Membrane:
The lining of the nasal cavity. It is far more moist and supple than skin, and it is rich in small veins and capillaries. It creates lots of mucus.
Diaphragm:
A dome-shaped muscular partition separating the thorax from the abdomen. It plays a major role in breathing, as its contraction increases the volume of the thorax.
Hemoglobin:
Hemoglobin transports oxygen in the blood of vertebrates.
Blood Plasma:
The liquid part of the blood that carries cells and proteins throughout the body.
Pulse Pressure:
The difference between systolic and diastolic blood pressure.
Vocal Cords:
Folds of membranous tissue that project inward from the sides of the larynx to form a slit across the glottis in the throat.
