Skeletal System Flashcards
(17 cards)
What are Joints?
These are the places where two or more bones come together to form the skeleton.
What is Cartilage?
This acts like a cushion in places where different bones come together.
What are Intercostal Muscles?
These are the muscles in between the ribs and they help us breath.
What Do Muscle Fibers Do?
They make up your muscles and help move you.
How Many Bones Does the Vertebral Column Contain?
26
What is Excitability?
This means that they can respond to a stimulus or trigger.
What is Elasticity?
This is the ability to return to something’s original position after being stretched; contracted.
What is Collagen?
This is the primary structural protein of connective tissue.
What is a Cell?
This is the basic “building block” and the basic functional unit of the body; everything that the body does is performed by cells.
What are Sesamoid Bones?
These are bones embedded in a tendon or a muscle and are found where tendons pass over joints.
What is the Appendicular Skeleton?
This consists of the lower and upper limbs as well as the bones that connect them.
What is the Axial Skeleton?
This is made up of the skull, the vertebral column, and the ribs.
What is an Organ?
This is a collection of tissues that together form a specific function.
What is Homeostasis?
The many mechanisms and roles the body plays to keep itself in certain limits.
What is Mitochondria?
Mitochondria are the “Powerhouse”of the cell; they generate and store energy and produce high-energy molecules, one of the most important ATP.
What is Muscle Tone?
When there is some tension in the muscle even when it’s not actively being contracted.
What are Bones and Their Function?
They provide support for our bodies, protect soft organs, enable us to move, and store minerals and fat.
