Muscle System Flashcards
(26 cards)
Characteristics of Muscle
Contractility, elasticity, excitability, and extensibility.
What is the Definition of Contract?
Contract means to get smaller or shorter.
Types of Muscle
Skeletal muscle, smooth muscle, and cardiac muscle.
What is a Muscle Cramp?
A muscle cramp is caused when muscle fatigue causes the nervous system to overstimulate the muscle.
What is a Pulled Muscle?
A pulled muscle is a tear in the muscle tissue or tendons that hold them together.
What is Muscle Atrophy?
When a muscle is not used for a while, the muscles get smaller and weaker.
What is Rigor Mortis?
Rigor Mortis occurs when the muscles all over the body contract and are unable to relax due to cells not being able to make ATP and soon run out of energy. Calcium ions then leak out of the sarcoplasmic reticulum and trigger cross-bridges all over the body.
How many skeletal muscles are there in the body?
640
Where are Muscles Situated?
Typically, a muscle is attached to two different bones across a joint. The muscle is connected to the bone by a tendon; when the muscle contracts, the bones are pulled toward one another.
What Does “Osteo” Mean?
Osteo is a prefix that means “bone.”
What does “Myo” Mean?
Myo is a prefix that means “muscle.”
What are Myofibrils Made Of?
Myofibrils are made of actin and myosin joined together by sarcomeres.
What are Anabolic Steroids?
Synthetic male hormones.
What Do Muscles Do #1?
When the muscle tissue that makes up your heart contracts, the heart squeezes and pumps and blood.
What Do Muscles Do #2?
Muscles help maintain your upright posture.
What Do Muscles DO #3?
Muscles help strengthen our joints.
What Do Muscles Do #4?
Muscle contraction generates heat.
Can Muscles Push?
Muscles can only pull, not push.
What Does Striated mean?
Striped.
What Type is Skeletal Muscle?
Voluntary muscle.
What is ATP?
When a muscle cell needs energy it breaks down ATP to ADP. With the release of P, energy stored in that chemical bond is released for the cell to use.
What are Antagonistic Muscles?
Since muscles cannot push, in order for full movement of the body to occur, there are muscles that work opposite one another.
What Are Thick Myofilaments?
They are made of myosin.
What Are Thin Myofilaments?
They are made of actin.
