End of Year Test Flashcards
(19 cards)
Definition of Evolution:
The belief that everything occurred by random chemical reactions.
Definition of Pulse:
The measure of how fast your heart is beating; it pushes blood into the arteries every time it beats.
Definition of Respiratory System:
A biological system consisting of specific organs used for gas exchange.
Definition of Cardiovascular System:
The system that circulates blood throughout the body consisting of the heart, blood vessels, blood, and lymph.
Definition of Hilum:
This is where the bronchi and blood vessels enter the lungs.
Definition of Excitability:
Being able to respond to a stimulus.
Definition of Adrenaline:
A stress hormone produced that quickens the heartbeat and opens up bronchioles in the lungs.
Definition of Asthma:
A chronic inflammatory disease of the airways that constricts airflow to the lungs.
Definition of Coronary Circulation:
A system of arteries and veins that deliver oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle and carries away deoxygenated blood.
Definition of Abdominal Aorta:
The remaining section of the aorta below the diaphragm. It is located in the back of the abdomen; towards the spine.
Systole:
The period of time when a heart chamber is contracting.
ECG:
The measurement of the heart’s electrical impulses and that instructs the heart to beat; this can be measured by placing a few electrodes on the body.
What Does the Heart Generate?
The heart generates electrical impulses that allow the heart to beat correctly and carry blood throughout the body.
What is a Blood Pressure Reading?
When your blood pressure is measured using your diastolic and systolic measurements.
What is the Point of Pumping Blood
Pumping blood throughout the body must be done in order to get oxygen to tissues, organs, and muscle all around the body and get rid of the deoxygenated blood and carry it back to the lungs. This is called the “Cardiac Cycle.”
What Causes Ear Infections in the Young?
Ear infections are common in the young because their Eustachian Tubes are smaller in diameter and shorter. Their Tubes swell shut more easily than an adult and, being shorter, bacteria only has to make a short trip to the middle ear.
What are Alveoli?
These are tiny sacs that are located in the lungs and are the endpoint of the respiratory system. It is the site of gas exchange between the air and the blood and the alveolar capillaries.
Smoking Deaths Per Year:
About 480,000
Lower Respiratory System:
Trachea, bronchi and bronchioles, and the alveoli.
