Individuals are able to choose their own pathways in life which direct them towards improvement in self and the world.
What did Carl Rogers think about people and their intentions?
That people are fundamentally good in nature. People are not functioning properly when they act irrationally or negatively.
What is phenomenology?
The study of how the individual perceives the world in a unique way from others and that those perceptions make up subjective reality.
What is another term for subjective reality?
Phenomenal field.

They become a part of self.

Due to time and circumstances.

What is actualization tendency?
An organism’s innate motivation towards developing its fullest potential. To enhance and actualize the self.
What is the organismic valuing process?
Judging experiences based on the value of actualization and growth.
How do you determine if a person is incongruent?
Their self-image and ideal self are far a part: very different from each other.
How do you determine if a person is congruent?
Their self-image and ideal self are close together: very similar to each other.
What strongly predicted personality?
Self-insight. How well you know yourself and how accurate and realistic it is.
How is self in childhood built?
Through unconditional and conditional positive regard.
What is the result of unconditional positive regard?
Positive self image and the development of the real self.
What is the result of conditional positive regard?
Conditional positive self image and failure and pathologies.
What is incongruence?
When there is a difference between self-concept and experience.
Why would a person use denial or perceptual distortion?
They are experiencing incongruence and become anxious.
What does a fully functioning person look like?
The desired result, self-actualization, and development of all facets of the self.
What are the characteristics of a fully functioning person?
Aware of all experiences, lives in the moment, trust in self, makes choices freely, creative, and may face difficulties.
