Causes Of Climate Change Flashcards
(11 cards)
What are the two main types of causes of climate change?
Human causes and natural (physical) causes
How does burning fossil fuels cause climate change?
It releases gases like carbon dioxide that trap heat in the air and is the largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions
Deforestation (effects on the climate)
Clearing forests for agricultural and urbanisation reduces the earths capacity to absorb carbon dioxide through photosynthesis
When forests are burned or degraded, carbon dioxide stored in tress in released back into the atmosphere
Agriculture (effects on the climate)
Agricultural activities sue as livestock and avocado plantages produce greenhouse gases.
Livestock, specifically cattle, emit methaan during digestion and avocados need a huge amount of water
Industrial processes (effects on the climate)
Cement production, chemical manufacturing and waste management release greenhouse gases
Explain the term physical causes
Natural things that change the Earth’s climate, but not as fast as humans do and therefore do not account for the rapid and significant warming absorbed in these last decades
Explain human causes
Human activities are the primary cause leading to climate change
What are Milankovitch cycles?
Slow changes in the Earth’s movement that can change the climate over thousands of years
What is El Niño?
Can cause temporary fluctuations in global temperature patterns but does not account for long term warming
What is solar irradiance?
Changes in the sun’s energy. But recently, it hasn’t changed much, so it’s not a big cause
How do volcanic eruptions affect the climate?
They can release ash and gases that block sunlight and cool the Earth for a short time.
