CBTC Flashcards

1
Q

What is CBTC?

A

Computer Based Train Control

A railway signalling system using telecommunications between train and track equipment.

CBTC knows the exact location of trains more accurately than traditional systems.

CBTC is a more efficient and safe way to manage railway traffic, improving headways while maintaining or improving safety.

Q

What is ATC?

A

Automatic Train Control

Comprised of the following:

ATO - Automatic Train Operation
A system that controls the regulation of acceleration, coasting, braking and station stopping of the train.

ATP - Automatic Train Protection
Continuously compares the actual train speed with maximum speed safe speed and ensures safe and adequate separation of rail traffic as per system parameters.

What is the DCS?

A

Data Communication System

Provides communications link between the following sub-systems to enable constant communication:
ATC - Automatic Train Control
ATS - Automatic Train Supervision
MSS - Maintenance Support System
CBI - Computer Based Interlocking

Q

What is CBI?

A

Computer based interlocking

Interlocking equipment is controlled through computer systems, such as points and PPIs.

Q

What is ‘Fixed Block’?

A

Utilised axle counters as Secondary Detection Devices through the Central Logic Computer. These devices serve to track each train’s location and to track occupancy detection for non-CBTC equipped trains and non-communicative CBTC trains.

Fixed Block system enables a Point Position Indicator (PPI) signal to display a PROCEED indication when:
* The block beyond the PPI signal is unoccupied and
* There are no conflicting routes set, and
* The points are correctly set and locked

Q

What is ‘Moving Block’ Principle?

A

The CBTC system utilises moving block, allowing real-time regulation and safe separation of rail traffic using Automatic Protection generated by the Automatic Train Controller.

Rail traffic movements correctly activating the signalling system continually communicate their speed, location and status of vehicles to maintain safe separation between trains.
