Cell Biology Flashcards
(9 cards)
What are the main differences between eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells?
Eukaryotic cells have Nuclei while prokaryotic dont
What is the purpose of the nucleus?
Contains genetic material that controls the activities of the cell
What is the purpose of the cytoplasm?
It is where most chemical reactions take place in the cell
What is the purpose of the cell wall and cell membrane?
Cell wall - Provides rigid structure so cell doesn’t burst
Cell Membrane - Controls what comes in and out of the cell
What are the differences in organelles in plant and animal cells?
Plant cells - Chloroplast, Cell wall, Permanent Vacuole
Name the different organelles of a Sperm cell that helps it do its function.
Flagellum - To help swim to the egg
Mitochondria - Lots of mitochondria to use the correct amount of energy needed to make it to the egg
Enzymes in the head of sperm - To help break through the egg to fertilise it
How do bacterial cells store dna?
They store it in small rings of DNA called plasmids and also in single circular strands of DNA present in the cytoplasm
What are Ribosomes used for
They are where proteins are made in the cell
What are mitochondria used for?
They are used for respiration
