Q

Why do you want to be a fire fighter?

A

I really love the job I do right now, but I also doubt whether it’s the same sustainable career that it’s been in the past. Over the past few years, we’ve had a shocking increase in calls and decrease in staff and I’m worried the stresses may become overwhelming in the future. I really enjoyed my times with the fire departments I’ve been involved in with in the the past and appreciate the commitment not just to performance but to planning and preparation to put together that performance.

STAR
Situation, Task, Action, Result
26
What done in preperation for this interview
Reviewed the STAR method, come up with a list of potential examples and investigated possible questions as well as researched helpful tips for successful interviews, created flashcards and practiced answers
27
Most appealing portion of the job? Least?
Physically active. I miss being physically active. Not being in the gym, but moving, lifting, working together as a team to accomplish goals. Least:
28
What do I bring to this dept?
Someone who's enjoys physical work, is keen to learn and a significant background in pre-hospital medicine. Additionally, I feel that I have a proven ability to maintain calmness and competency in the face of stressful sitations and an ability to integrate amongst various communities and cultures to be able to de-escalate things and both gain information and provide information in times of high stress.
29
Biggest weakness
Tardiness, but in relation to scheduled times. It's something that I've been working to improve and have been by setting alarms 15-30min prior to needing to be places, but I also know that it's something that comes about particularly when I have a time - such as a meeting - not completing a task. I've gone nearly 10 years responding to emergencies promptly ********** Building/construction?
30
Finding drugs in a FF locker
I'd start with an open ended, how are things?
31
Member intox
That's not safe. That's not something requiring blame, but it is something that is an immediate safety stop. Next/highest to voice concerns.
32
Most important attribute: Trust
I remember a TED talk about Navy Seals and their determination of value, whether they wanted someone who they couldn't trust but was the best or someone who they could trust but wasn't the best. Preferred the trust. Something about If you can trust them with your wife, you can trust them with your life. With trust, you can trust they will work hard to be better.
33
When you don't know the answer, how do you respond?
Sorry, I'm not sure but I'll find out for you
34
At the end of your career what would be an accomplishment you would be most proud of?
Being someone that is considered a competent, safe, trustworthy individual that others can go to when they need help - whether that's job specifics, a safe space to talk or physical assistance.
35
Tell us about a time you've stolen something/broken the law/
36
Why should we select you over others?
Difficult to say, as I can only imagine that each of them brings their own expertise to the role. I have my weaknesses, but I also have my strenths that others may not have. I believe I am trustworthy, stress inoculated, capable and
37
Tell us about yourself?
38
Tell us about a time you DISAGREED with someone/boss?
COVID+ STEMI to VGH - yes sir.
39
How many members?
160-170?
40
Size of Coquitlam?
152kmSq, 6x PoCo/PoMo
41
Time I have recieved criticism
- Taking patient to Burnaby for leg fracture? - Doc questionning magsulf on north shore?
42
Everyone sitting in that chair says a lot of the same things - what can you say to set yourself apart?
43
Why is diversity important? How has it improved your life?
So many different aspects of diversity, but I think the idea of variation in culture is the way I envision it. Having that variation is key to ensure that there's multiple ways of looking at a problem to find the best way. I've been lucky to have been able to travel and see some of the world as well as have a massive expanse of friends from multiple cultures. STAR:
