Ch. 14 Flashcards
(12 cards)
1
Q
Somatic Neurons
A
sensory input from receptors conscious thoughts and movement
2
Q
Special Senses
A
vision, hearing, taste, smell, and equilibrium, perception
3
Q
Somatic Senses
A
pain, temperature, tactile and proprioception sensation
4
Q
Motor
A
skeleton muscles; voluntary
5
Q
Integration and Control
A
- Involuntary regulation by hypothalamus, brain stem, and some spinal cord segments
- Somatic and special senses input through limbic system
6
Q
Autonomic Neurons
A
- Sensory: input from autonomic interreceptor in viscera and blood vessels, subconscious
- Motor: two synapses to cardiac muscle, smooth muscle, and glands; involuntary
7
Q
Sympathetic
A
- Series of physiological responses “fight or flight”
- Supports vigorous physical activity
8
Q
Parasympathetic
A
- Series of physiological responses “ rest and digest”
- Supports conversation and restoration of body energy during rest and recovery periods
9
Q
Sensation and Perception
A
- Sensation: is the conscious and subconscious detection of changes in the external or internal environment
- Perception: is the conscious awareness and interpretation of sensations
10
Q
Process of Sensation
A
- Stimulation of a sensory receptor
- Transduction of the stimulus
- Generation of nerve impulses
- Integration of sensory input
11
Q
Proprioceptive Sensations
A
- Deep somatic pain: nociceptors in skeletal muscle, joints, tendon, and fascia
- Superficial somatic pain: nociceptors in skin
- Visceral Pain: nociceptors in visceral organs
12
Q
Upper Motor Neuron Pathways
A
- Direct Pathways: axons extend from the primary motor areas of cerebral cortex
- Indirect Pathways: axons extend from lower motor centers in the brain stem
