Ch.13 Flashcards
(9 cards)
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
bundles of axons outside of CNS, along with associated connective tissues and blood vessels
Cranial nerves
arise from the brain
Spinal nerves
arise from the spinal cord
Sympathetic
“fight or flight” directs autonomic bodily responses during stress
Parasympathetic
“rest and digest” regulates autonomic bodily functions during rest
Cranial Nerves continued
- 12 PAIRED SETS numbered from the front of the brain to the back.
- The LOWER numbered cranial nerves are located towards the FRONT OF THE BRAIN, while the HIGHER numbered nerves are located TOWARDS THE BRAIN STEM AND SPINAL CORD
Vagus
controls body functions specifically related to digestion and heart rate maintaining the basic functions of life
Spinal Nerves
31 pairs of spinal nerves
- named and numbered by region and level of the spinal cord they pertain to regions: cervical (5), thoracic (12), lumbar (5), sacral (5), coccygeal (1)
Principle Plexus
-network of various numbers of axons form adjacent nerves
- cervical (C1-C5) , Brachial (C5-T1), Lumbar(L1-L14), Sacral(L4-L5, S1-S4)
