Dawes Act (1887)
Law that broke up Native lands into individual allotments. Purpose was to break down societal structure of native Americans and force them to assimilate to American culture.
Queue Ordinance (1873)
Passed in San Francisco. Said that if Chinese people were arrested, law enforcement could forcibly cut their hair.
California School law (1860)
Segregated schools. Said children pf Chinese descent could not go to school with white children.
People v Hall (1854)
Supreme Court case that established the precedent that the Chinese can’t testify in court against other white people.
Poll tax
A fee that you had to pay in order to vote. This targeted African Americans the most as they were prevented from gaining wealth during reconstruction and didn’t have generational wealth.
Plessy v Ferguson (1896)
Established the legal precedent of segregation. “Separate but equal”
Fort Laramie Treaty
Established Indian reservations. Also said that the US government promised to supplement the basic needs of the Native Americans.
_____ Exclusion Act
Chinese Exclusion Act. Banned immigration from China for a ten year period with very few exceptions. The act was later extended. And after that it was made permanent.
1790 Naturalization Act
Prevented people of color who immigrated to the United States from becoming citizens.
Capitation Tax (1855)
Put a tax on sailors who brought people from China on their boats.
Anti-Miscegenation Law
Law that established that banned interracial marriage between white people and African Americans.
Anti-Miscegenation Amendment
Added to the previous law. Said that people of Chinese descent could not marry white people.
Literacy test
Very hard tests that aimed to disenfranchise African Americans in the South.
Talented Tenth
The top ten percent of the Black population that would get a classical education and go on to lead black society.
