Ch.8 Flashcards
Blind spot
- The point of entry of the optic nerve on the retina, insensitive to light
Accommodation
- Adaptation on response to differences or changing needs
- Adjustments of the eye for seeing objects at close range
Chemoreceptors
-Receptors sensitive to various chemical in solution
Choroid
-The pigmented nutritive layer of the eye
Ciliary Body
-Part of the eye that connects the iris to the choroid
Cochlea
-A cavity of the inner ear resembling a snail shell; houses the hearing receptors.
Cornea
-The transparent anterior portion of the eyeball
Crista ampullaris
-The sensory organ of rotation located in the semicircular canal of the inner ear.
Dynamic equilibrium
-Sense that reports on angular or rotatory movements of the head in space.
Iris
-The pigmented, involuntary muscle that acts as the diaphragm of the eye
Labyrinth
-Bony cavities and membranes of the inner ear that houses the hearing and equilibrium receptors.
Lens
-The elastic, doubly convex structure in the eye that focuses the light entering the eye on the retina.
Maculae
-An oval yellowish area; it is the region with the greatest visual activity
Mechanoreceptors
-Receptors sensitive to mechanical pressures such as touch, sound, or contractions
Olfactory Receptors
- Responsible for the detection of odor molecules.
Organ of Corti
-A structure in the cochlea of the inner ear that produces nerve impulses in response to sound vibrations.
Ossicles
-The three bones of the middle ear: hammer(malleus), anvil (incus), and stirrup (stapes); also called the auditory ossicles.
Photoreceptors
-Specialized receptor cells that respond to light energy
Refraction
-Bending; usually refers to light
Retina
-Light-sensitive layer of the eye; contains rods and cones
Sclera
-The firm white fibrous outer layer of the eyeball; protects and maintains eyeball shape
Semicircular canals
- Three fluid-filled bony channels in the ear.
- provide information about orientations the brain to help maintain balance
Static equilibrium
-Balance concerned with changes in position of the head
Taste buds
-Receptors for taste on the tongue, roof of mouth, and pharynx
