Cha. 6 - Respiratory System Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is the respiratory system?
Also known as the pulmonary system, that brings oxygen into the lungs while removing the outside air, includes airways, lungs, and the respiratory muscles
What is the respiratory pump?
Composed of skeletal structures and soft tissues (muscles) that work together to allow for proper respiratory mechanics as well as pumping blood back to the heart during inspiration
What is inspiration?
The process of contracting the inspiratory muscles to move air into the body
What is expiration?
The process of actively or passively relaxing the inspiratory muscles to move air out of the body
What is Valsalva maneuver?
A process that involves taking a deep breath and closing the mouth and nose shut, then blowing out that air while the mouth and nose are shut.
Creating additional intra-abdominal pressure and spinal stability
The valsalva maneuver should be minimized when training who?
A client diagnosed with high blood pressure(hyper tension)
What is Diffusion?
The process of getting oxygen from the environment to the tissues of the body
What is Asthma?
A respiratory condition that causes temporary shortness of breath, coughing, and a wheezing sound while attempting to breath.
Clients with asthma should always carry along their emergency inhaler if they will be performing physical activity, especially during moderate-to-intense exercise
What is Tachypnea?
Respiratory rate that is too fast; greater than 24 breaths per minute
What is Bradypnea?
Respiratory rate that is too slow; fewer than 8 breaths per minute
What is Dyspnea?
Shortness of breath or labored breathing
