Chapman's and Lymphatics Flashcards
(102 cards)
Where does Lymphatic circulation return into?
Subclavian vein
What does the Left Thoracic Duct drain?
Majority of the body except Right hemicranium, Right UE, Heart and Lungs (except left upper lobe)
What does the right thoracic (minor) duct drain?
Right Hemicranium
Right Upper extremity
Heart
Lungs: except the left upper lobe
What is the effect of Sympathetics on Lymphatic capillaries?
Constriction
What is the primary mover of Lymph?
The Thoracic Diaphragm
What are the thoracic and abdominal pressures that occur with contraction of the diaphragm?
(-) Thoracic Pressure
(+) Abdominal Pressure
What are Relative Contraindications to Lymphatic Treatment?
Osseus Fracture
Untreated Bacterial Infections
Abscess or Local Infection in area to be treated
Cancer
What are the 2 main categories of Lymphatic Treatment?
Improve Restrictions
Augmentation of Flow
treatment should include 1 from each category
What is the basic sequence for lymphatic treatment?
“TSDP”
-Thoracic Inlets
-sympathetic with rib raising
-Thoracic diaphragm
-Pump techniques
What needs to be treated first in lymphatic techniques?
The thoracic Inlet
What is the Functional thoracic inlet?
T1-4
Ribs 1-2
Manubrium of the sternum
What is the anatomic Thoracic Inlet?
T1
First Ribs
Superiorend of the manubrium
What is Sibson’s Fascia?
CT of the Scalenes and longus Colli muscle which is transversed by both lymphatic ducts
What is another name for the Thoracic Pump technique?
Miller Pump
What is another name for the Pedal Pump Technique?
Dalrymple Pump
What are Chapman’s Reflexes?
Palpable points in predictable locations due to increased sympathetic tone or blockages in the lymphatic system
What cause Chapman’s reflexes?
Increased sympathetic tone or blockages in the lymphatic system
What is felt on Palpation of Chapman’s reflexes?
Smooth, firm discreet nodules 2-3mm within the deep fascia or on the periosteum of the bone
What are posterior Chapman’s reflexes located?
Halfway between the SP and TP
Where are Anterior Chapman’s reflexes located?
Varying locations including laterally
What do acute chapman’s reflexes feel like?
Boggy, Edematous
What do chronic chapman’s reflexes feel like?
Ropy, Thickened and “feels like a pea”
Do you treat the Anterior or Posterior chapman’s reflex first?
Anterior
How do you treat a Chapman’s Reflex?
Contact the point with the finger pad: apply circular pressure for 15 second to 2 minutes until the fascia softens
