Osteopathic Philosophy and Principles of Techniques Flashcards
(14 cards)
What is the Biomechanical Model?
Posture and body movement: focus on principles of tensegrity and the relationship between structure and function
What is the most common compensatory Zink Pattern?
OA Left
CT right
TL Left
LS right
What do non-compensated zink patterns describe?
Non-accomodating and persistent issues: unhealthy people with complaints secondary to stress or trauma
What is the Neurological Model?
Sensory and Protective: Centers on the nervous systems role in health and disease
What does treatment focus on in the neurological model?
Neural reflex activity (Facilitation)
-neural tissues
-reflex arcs (interspinal neurons)
-autonomic regulation of target organs
Where are the PNS origins?
Cranial Nerves (Vagus)
Sacral Plexus
Where are the SNS origins?
Thoracic, Upper Lumbar
Describe Sympathetic Preganglionic Neurons?
Cholinergic: Short cord to synapse at ganglion
ACh acts on nicotinic receptor
Describe Sympathetic postganglionic neurons?
Adrenergic: long: act on target organ with catecholamines
Describe the Parasympathetic Preganglionic Neurons?
Long: cholinergic on nicotinic receptors in brainstem and sacral cord
Describe the Parasympathetic Postganglionic Neurons?
Short: cholinergic on muscarinic receptors close to the target organ
What is the Respiratory-Circulatory Model?
Diaphragms as pumps: focus on efficient exchange or gases, nutrients and waste to optimize blood flow, drainage and oxygenation
What is the Metabolic-Energy model?
Digestion, Absorption, Elimination and Metabolism: balance of Energy production and expenditure
What is the Behavioral-Biopsychosocial Model?
Conscousness and Behavior: interconnectedness of the mind, body and spirit
