Chapter 1 (1.2 Skin) Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is the function of skin?
-Helps to regulate body temperature
-Protect from harmful substances
How many layers does the human skin have?
2 layers
What layer does the skin consist?
-Epidermis (outer layer)
-Dermis (inner layer)
What are the characteristics of epidermis?
-Outermost layer of the skin
-Made up of dead cells and is waterproof
-Protective layer preventing the entry of bacteria into the body tissues
-Consists of pain receptors
What are the characteristics of dermis?
-Consists of connective tissues
-Has receptors that detect cold, hot and touch
-Consists of muscle fibres, sweat glands and blood vessels
What are the characteristics of fatty layer?
-Bottom layer of skin
-Layer controlling the body temperature
-Store fats
-Consists of pressure receptors
What is the function of pain receptor?
Lie very close to the skin surface to detect even a slight pain
What is the function of cold receptor?
Sensitive to cold and detect the colder temperature than usual
What is the function of heat receptor?
Sensitive to heat and detect the hotter temperature than usual
What is the function of touch receptor?
Detect light touches
What is the function of pressure receptor?
Lie deep within the skin and detect the forceful pressure against the skin
What does the degree of sensitivity depend on?
-Thickness of the epidermis
-Number of receptors
What are the examples of sensitivity of the skin in everyday life?
-Injection sites
-Reading “Braille”
