What is the atomic number?
Number of protons in an atom
What is the mass number?
Number of protons plus the number of neutrons in the nucleus
What has poor conductivity?
Nonmetals
How do you determine elements that have similar properties?
Elements in the same group
What are the four stages of matter?
Solid, liquid, gas, and plasma
What are two different kinds of matter?
Pure substances and mixtures
What are the different kinds of pure substances?
Elements and compounds
What are the different kinds of mixtures?
Homogeneous and heterogeneous
What is a pure substance?
Atom/molecule that has constant composition
What is an element?
Pure substance composed of the same type of atom
What is a compound?
Pure substance composed of 2+ different types of atoms
What is a mixture?
Varying amounts of 2+ atoms/molecules; has 2+ types of atoms/molecules
What is a homogeneous mixture?
Same properties throughout mixture
EX: solutions
What is a hetergeneous mixture?
2+ phases; no uniform distribution within mixture
How to calculate atomic percentage?
of specific element’s atoms/total # of atoms x 100%
How to calculate mass percentage?
Mass of part/mass of whole x 100%
What is chemical change?
Chemical composition changes
What are chemical properties?
The substance shows as it interacts or transform into, other substances
What are physical properties?
Substance is shown without interaction with another substance
What is precision?
How small the degree of error is
What is physical change?
The physical state changes without changing composition
What is accuracy?
How close to the true value
